The Appointed Person training course is designed to give you the skills and knowledge to become competent in planning safe systems of work for carrying out lifting operations.

In response to candidate feedback we offer the Appointed Person course over either four or five days, depending on experience.

Many candidates find the CPCS A61 Appointed Person Technical Test particularly challenging, even some of those with extensive lifting operations experience, so the extra day may be beneficial to you.

Successful Completion
Successful candidates will be awarded a CPCS Trained Operator card for Appointed Person (Lifting Operations).

  • Legislation and Codes of Practice (BS 7121)
  • Roles and responsibilities of lifting operations personnel
  • Duties of the Appointed Person
  • Thorough examination and certification
  • Selection of cranes
  • Lifting capacity and duties charts
  • Crane positioning and configuration
  • Selection and use of lifting accessories
  • Methods of communication
  • Carrying out a risk assessment
  • Preparing a method statement
  • Crane plan and elevation drawings
  • CPCS Technical Test for category A61 – Appointed Person (Lifting Operations)

Further Learning
The course must be followed up by an NVQ Level 6 Diploma in Controlling Lifting Operations – Planning Lifts (Construction), within two years. This will award you with a CPCS Competent Operator card for Appointed Person (Lifting Operations).

To further develop your abilities in managing safe systems of work, the Site Management Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS) course is recommended.

Other Options for this Course
CPCS Technical Test Only (no training given). This course can be done without the CPCS Technical Test, which would award Emerson certification.

Please Note
All candidates that attend the CPCS Appointed Person course must have passed the ConstructionSkills Managerial and Professional Health & Safety Test within two years prior to commencing the course.
